The DMARC Enforcement Roadmap: From p=none to p=reject

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) unifies SPF and DKIM. While setting p=none allows you to monitor sending sources, it provides zero protection against domain impersonation.

Phase 1: Discovery (p=none)
Audit all legitimate third-party sending streams (CRMs, transactional tools, support desks) via RUA aggregate reporting without impacting deliverability.
Phase 2: Quarantine (p=quarantine)
Route unaligned or forged messages directly into the recipient’s spam folder. Provides immediate security while verifying that no critical business systems are failing alignment.
Phase 3: Reject (p=reject)
The ultimate security posture. Mailbox providers drop spoofed messages directly at the SMTP handshake before they can ever reach the recipient inbox.
