The Science of SMTP 4xx Exponential Backoff

When a receiving mail server returns an SMTP 4xx response (e.g. 421 4.7.0 Try again later), it is signaling temporary load, greylisting, or rate throttling. Retrying too rapidly will escalate the deferral into an outright 5xx blacklisting.

Exponential Multipliers
Start with 15 minutes, then multiply each subsequent retry interval (e.g., 15m, 30m, 1h, 2h, 4h). This respects ISP queues while ensuring messages are delivered.
Greylisting Handling
Corporate email firewalls (Proofpoint, Mimecast) often intentionally reject initial connection attempts with a 451 code. A proper retry after 15 minutes clears the greylist permanently.
Automated Spool Pruning
If a message cannot be delivered within 48 hours, the MTA must generate a bounce receipt to the sender and purge the file from disk to prevent queue bloat.
