Executive Summary

Operational engineering guide to transient email delivery impediments (Soft Bounces). Explores 4xx response codes (mailbox full, greylisting, temporary rate limits), optimal queue retry topologies, exponential and jittered backoff schedules, destination-specific retry tuning, and converting recurring transient deferrals into hard suppressions.

RFC 5321 Transient Deferral Mechanics

A Soft Bounce—formally classified as a Transient Persistent Failure under RFC 5321 and RFC 3463—occurs when a receiving Mail Transfer Agent issues a 4xx response code during an SMTP conversation. Unlike a permanent 5xx rejection, a 4xx status explicitly requests that the sending MTA keep the message in its local outbound spool and attempt redelivery after a reasonable delay.

Soft bounces indicate operational or resource constraints rather than invalid email addresses: destination storage quotas exceeded, greylisting verification challenges, temporary connection throttles, or internal backend mail routing outages.

Categorization of Common 4xx Error Triggers

Modern deliverability engineering distinguishes between four primary classes of soft bounces:

Enhanced Code Category Underlying Cause Recommended MTA Reaction
4.2.2 Mailbox Quota Recipient disk storage or message count limit exceeded. Retry every 2 hours up to 48 hours; suppress if perpetual.
4.4.2 Connection Dropped Network timeout, reset by peer, or TLS handshake interruption. Immediate retry via alternative egress IP or fallback route.
4.7.1 Greylisting / Anti-Spam MTA deliberately defers first attempt to filter automated spam bots. Retry after exactly 10–15 minutes; message will clear gate.
4.2.1 / 4.5.3 Rate Limit Exceeded Too many concurrent connections or messages per hour from sending IP. Exponential backoff; dynamically downscale sending concurrency.

Retry Schedules & Exponential Jitter Backoff

Naive MTA configurations retry deferred messages at fixed linear intervals (e.g., every 5 minutes). When an ISP like Yahoo or Microsoft throttles a sending IP, fixed retry loops trigger severe “thundering herd” spikes that compound the throttle, resulting in IP reputation demotion.

The Exponential Jitter Formula

Enterprise MTAs calculate retry backoff using exponential backoff with full jitter: delay = min(max_backoff, base_interval * (2 ** retry_count)) + random_jitter. This decorrelates outbound traffic bursts and gives the destination queue time to clear.

Greylisting Traps & Automated First-Pass Bypass

Greylisting is an anti-spam technique that temporarily rejects messages from unrecognized (Client IP, Sender Envelope, Recipient) triplets with a 451 response. Standard spam bots rarely maintain persistent delivery spools, abandoning deferred messages.

Properly tuned MTAs automatically store greylisted triplets in local memory. When the second delivery attempt occurs 10–15 minutes later, the remote server recognizes the legitimate retry, whitelists the triplet, and delivers the message directly to the primary inbox.

Mitigating ISP Concurrency Throttling (421 Drops)

When destination providers encounter unexpected volume surges, they issue 421 4.7.0 [TSS04] Temporary deferral. This is not an address error; it is an infrastructure rate warning.

kumomta_policy.lua KumoMTA Adaptive Rate-Limiting Backoff Policy
local kumo = require 'kumo'

kumo.on('smtp_client_eval_status', function(msg, status)
  -- Detect Yahoo/AOL 421 rate deferrals
  if status:match("421 4.7.0") or status:match("TSS04") then
-- Throttled by receiver: pause sending queue for 15 minutes
    msg:set_meta("throttle_state", "active")
    msg:retry_after("15m")
  end
end)

Converting Perpetual 4xx Deferrals to Suppressions

A message that continuously soft bounces for 72 hours without success must not remain in the spool indefinitely. AutoSMTP enforces an automatic aging threshold: after 72 hours of persistent 4xx deferrals across 18 distinct attempts, the message is marked as expired, discarded from the queue, and recorded as an administrative suppression to protect queue velocity.
